                        Coaches and Instructors

Over the years the KVU has had the privilege of working with many outstanding musical coaches, choreographers, and vocal instructors.   Below are some of these talented men and women.

Jeremy Conover - Vocal Performance Coach

                        Picture
Since 2008, Jeremy has worked with Aaron and the music team to provide consistent vocal instruction that the ensemble can refer to week to week. As a certified Singing Judge for the BHS, Jeremy provides valuable insight into the BHS contest system, but also focuses on helping the KVU sing all their repertoire at a higher level.  Jeremy has a Percussion and Jazz background, has been a director at international with the Terre Haute chapter, and is a three-time district quartet champ (The PURSUIT - 2010 Sunshine District Champs and International Semi-Finalist - www.thepursuitquartet.com,  The Arrangement - 2006 Cardinal District Champs and International Quarterfinalist and Afterthought - 2002 Cardinal District Champ). Oh, and on top of all of that, Jeremy has performed with the KVU in nearly every contest since fall 2007!  Jeremy currently serves as one of the architects of the KVU's innovative and artistic sound as a Vocal Performance Coach. In his "real" life, Jeremy is a Regional Manager for CoolMore Fluid Systems (www.coolmorefs.com) and resides with his wife Jen, daughter, Riley Kate, and Boston Terrier, Stewie in beautiful Savannah, GA

Tim Brooks - Vocal Performance Coach

                        Picture
Tim has coached the KVU since fall of 2008 after their Nashville appearance.  He has been an encouraging and guiding voice in helping the chorus sing artistically and improve our basic core sound.   Tim is a three-time Dixie District Quartet Champion. He won in 1987 singing tenor with The Atlanta Forum, in 1995 singing baritone with The Svelte Bros., and in 2003 singing lead with StateLine Grocery.  Tim currently sings lead with 2011 international finalists quartet, A Mighty Wind.  He is a Singing Judge with the Barbershop Harmony Society, and director of Georgia's Stone Mountain Chorus.
Tim and his wife, Karen, live in Grayson, GA with their two sons, Daniel and Michael.

                        Shannon Mitchell - Choreographer

                        Picture
Shannon choreographed the 2011 international contest package that the KVU performed in Kansas City (Since I Don't Have You, and Rock This Town).  Her expertise brought authentic, fresh, and exciting choreography to the KVU - helping the chorus break more away from cliche "barbershop" visual ideas and to be as natural and entertaining as possible.  Shannon lives in Louisville with her husband, David (KVU member), and two children.  She is an elementary music educator in Jefferson County, Kentucky, and teaches dance in the evenings at a local studio.   Shannon makes it happen!

Theresa Weatherbee - Visual Coach and Choreographer

                        Picture
Theresa comes to the KVU from Nova Scotia, Canada, and as worked with the KVU since 2008, and was key in helping to develop and refine the visual plan for the KVU's debut international appearance in Nashville 2008, and for the the Anaheim 2009 competition. She essentially came in and "rescued" our visual plan in spring 2008 - making it "A" level and spectacular.  Since 2009 she has been an ongoing resource for the KVU through online and in-person coaching sessions - helping to refine choreography and overall performance effect.  She really helped to define the KVU's personality - we're forever grateful for Theresa and her talent!

                        David McEachern

                        Picture
The KVU seems to enjoy working with Canadians  - especially those who make our presentation and overall performance more natural and entertaining - as does our very tall buddy Dave McEachern!    Dave started working with the KVU in May 2011 at Aaron's request to help mold the current contest set into a final version.  Though late in the game that year, Dave's theater and performance background was just what the KVU needed at that time - immediately manifesting to us that we should continue requesting Dave's services  as we prepare for future gigs.   He is a certified BHS Presentation judge, and has been the primary choreographer and visual instructor for the internationally acclaimed Toronto Northern Lights chorus through most of its existence.

                        Sean Devine - Performance Coach

                        Picture
Sean knows how to connect with our guys!  He motivates them and helps them see their potential as performers.  Not only is a certified BHS Presentation Judge, he can demonstrate valuable vocal techniques.  This comes from his experience as lead section leader of two international chorus champs (Masters of Harmony, and Westminster), and also as the stylistic lead singer for OC Times - 2008 quartet champs.  Sean is such a valuable resource for us!

                        Ev Nau - Visual Coach

                        Picture
Ev is a certified BHS Presentation judge, and has coached the KVU since 2008 in preparation for many events.  In fact, during the fall of 2008 we invited Ev to attend the fall 2008 contest to help us prepare.  We asked Ev to join us back then because he lays down the law and our guys respond.   Nuff said!   We love Ev!

Brandon Guyton - Vocal Performance Coach

                        Picture
The first coaching the KVU had with Brandon was a double-team session with his brother, Chad, in September 2007 prior to that fall contest.   Since then, Brandon has continued to work with the KVU prior to various events.   The KVU men truly benefit from Brandon's passion for making the barbershop sound come alive.  And he knows his stuff...being a certified BHS Singing Judge, bass section leader for the Ambassadors of Harmony, and two-time International Quartet Champ (Four Voices - 2002 with Chad on lead, and Crossroads - 2009 champs).

                        Jon Nicholas - Performance Coach

                        Picture
Jon is a former KVU member, and the current director of the Kentuckians Chorus from Lexington, KY.  He is rightfully mentioned among our coaches and instructors because of his strong involvement as a founding member of the KVU, filling the initial role as  baritone section leader and as an assistant director until spring 2009.  Jon was vital in helping the chorus stay focused and dedicated to success during its early years - coaching the chorus on craft and vocal techniques during rehearsals, and always setting a strong example of excellence as a performer.  Jon's wisdom and experience came from many years as a high-level performer.  He won a chorus gold medal with the Thoroughbreds in 1984, and he's a two time district quartet champ (Class of 84 - 1984, and The Sensations - 2000).

                        Jay Hawkins - Performance Coach
